Analysis of Discoloration Phenomenon of Caterpillar Excavator Cylinder

Many excavator users have encountered the problem of discoloration of the cylinder, thinking that the quality of the cylinder is defective. 

In fact, in many cases, the discoloration of the cylinder has nothing to do with its quality. 

Next, the editor will take a Caterpillar excavator as an example to explain the reasons for the discoloration of the cylinder and how to deal with it.

The phenomenon that the cylinder becomes black, blue or purple is not because the cylinder itself changes color, but because the cylinder surface is covered with a colored film, so it is not a problem of the cylinder itself. Under normal circumstances, the cylinder will first become blue, then the color will deepen, become purple, and eventually become black.

There are many reasons for the discoloration of the cylinder. The following are the common reasons for discoloration.

1. There is a high temperature phenomenon in the hydraulic system. During work, the piston rod frequently comes into contact with the low temperature environment at high temperatures (especially in the cold season) (the temperature drops suddenly);

2. The special hydraulic oil for excavators of this brand is replaced during the maintenance cycle, and the discoloration of the piston rod generally occurs within a few days of just changing the oil. 

The reason is that the quality and performance of an extreme pressure anti-wear additive in hydraulic oil are different;

3. The uneven temperature control during the electroplating process of the piston rod caused cracks on the surface of the electroplated layer in the later work. 

If you observe the surface of the piston rod with a high magnification magnifying glass, you can see small irregular cracks.

4. The blue of the cylinder is caused by the additives in the oil seal and hydraulic oil attached to the cylinder rod at high temperature, and the blackening is caused by the lead-containing additives in the spray in the cup (ie wear-resistant sleeve) attached to the cylinder at high temperatures. 

On the pole. Generally it is caused by the hydraulic oil temperature being too high, and this phenomenon mostly occurs in the first half of the bucket cylinder that is used more often. We recommend that the dirt on the radiator be cleaned frequently to ensure the heat dissipation effect.

Methods to deal with the discoloration of the cylinder:

If there is a very small part of the blue in the cylinder, you can ignore it, it will disappear automatically after a period of time;

If the discoloration is serious, you need to replace the oil seal and wear sleeve. At the same time, try to avoid the high temperature of the hydraulic oil, and it will return to normal after a while.
